It is now official

// July 31st, 2007 // No Comments » // Home Improvement

Jen and I are now home owners.

Well, technically, the bank owns most of it. Jen and I have a small chunk that we’ve paid for….

It seems I am going to be learning a lot about home improvement in the coming months/years. I may as well make some friends at the local Home Depot.

Oh yeah, and by the way. Moving sucks.

Upgrades

// July 29th, 2007 // No Comments » // Gentoo, Linux, Server Stuff

I had some server upgrades today. I upgraded MySQL to 5.0.44 and PHP to 5.2.3, both of the stable versions in Gentoo’s portage. So far so good!

Wheeling Nailers

Wheeling Nailers

The Wheeling Nailers announced today they have reached an affiliate agreement with the Philadelphia Flyers for the 2007-08 season, according to club President Jim Brooks.

I was a fan of the Trenton Titans, but as soon as they were purchased by the New Jersey Devils organization, that ended. I just can’t bring myself to be involved in anything owned by the Devils. At any rate, it’s good to see the Flyers finally decide on an ECHL affiliation.

Google says: 320 mi – about 5 hours 22 mins

Good Lord. I guess I won’t be attending too many games.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating world dependencies... done!

I do like keeping things up to date.

Little friend

Little friend

For the last few days, there was a small furry addition in the corner near the office door. He hadn’t moved in days, which seemed odd to me. However, when the rain came, he decided to go hide elsewhere…

I really need to get a better camera phone. This one takes some really bad pictures. If you can’t tell what that blob is, it is a little brown bat.

I’ve got gas

That’s right Phillies fan, it has finally come. With a 10-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, the Phillies have finally done it. Their 10,000th loss. They are the first and only to do it. Philly fans, stand proud. We have finally won something.

Argh

Damnit. Don’t ever accidentally run out of manly deodorant. You will end up going to work smelling like your wife’s cucumber melon stuff.

MacBook Page Up/Down keys in Linux

// July 5th, 2007 // 23 Comments » // Linux

Leave it to Apple to do things different. I swear a lot of their changes make no sense, but they do them anyway just to be different. If you have a MacBook and have no need for OS X (like myself), then you have already installed some flavor of Linux. Just use Gentoo, it just makes sense.

However, the 13″ MacBook doesn’t have Page Up, Page Down, Home, or End keys. Apple uses the Up, Down, Left, and Right Arrows in conjunction with their Function (fn) key. To me, that’s all worthless. Something as fundamental as Page Up and Down. Install xmodmap and put this in your config file:

keycode 108 = Delete
keycode 75 = Home
keycode 76 = End
keycode 95 = Page_Up
keycode 96 = Page_Down

Run xmodmap xmodmap.conf and you are all set. This will remap F11 to Page Up, F12 to Page Down, F9 to Home, and F10 to End. The first one will also remap the smaller enter key near the arrow keys to be a Delete key, since the MacBook doesn’t have that either.

But 2 enter keys. That sounds like a good idea…

The truck fiasco is OVER

// July 2nd, 2007 // No Comments » // Truck

It is about time. Let us remember that this party started March 16th. As of June 30th, it is now over.

Damned cellphone pictures

I’ll keep the entire ugly story as short as possible. I told original dealer X to shove it. I called again and again with no callbacks. When I eventually called them back, also again and again, the “I don’t knows” continued over and over. I made things short and sweet.

“I will be in Monday. Have my deposit refund ready for me,” says Matt.

I went to another local dealer, and since it was June 30th, they were pushing to make not only month end numbers, but fiscal year end numbers as well. Well, that’s what they told me. Whatever, I got a great deal and in the end got a ton of upgrades from the truck I originally ordered. 2 1/2 hours later, I drove it off the lot. A brand new Dodge Ram 1500 ThunderRoad edition. Please excuse the terrible picture above, I haven’t had time yet to pull out the Nikon SLR, so I took a quickie with the Razr. More pictures to come over the July 4th break. It’s hard to tell, but the new truck is Patriot Blue, not black as previously ordered.

In the end, I walked into the original dealer and told them I wanted my money back. The manager didn’t even argue, he just cut a check. Yeah, that happens often. Someone screwed up big time and doesn’t have the guts to admit it. Be a man you sissies.

If you live in Allentown/Whitehall-ish area and you are looking for a new vehicle, please visit Rothrock and ask for Tyler. Tell him Matt sent you. Nothing but first class service.
