I got here after wondering "why the hell did they not just put Page Up/Down keys". And wasn't it only recently they actually added right click buttons?

I think that Microsoft has probably patented the "intuitive" ways of doing stuff and Apple has been having to eat table scraps. Trying to help someone who uses a Mac with their C++ homework assignment was the most frustrating thing in the world. God forbid they actually put Ctrl in the proper position that 95% of the world uses. No let's put a Fn key there.

I recently bought a macbook pro. I wanted it for a particular piece of software. Well I have to say I am very disappointed in the OSX experience. It just gets in the way so much of the time. Now it isn't just because I am so used to one OS. I've used various now extinct OS's, DOS, unices, Windows, and of course Linux. All have their quirks and limitations, you just have to get used to them and work around them. The one deficit I find hardest to deal with however is "smart" interfaces that know better than me and OSX is just brimming with this. The other thing I don't like is the walled garden, I thought Windows was bad but Apple is worse.

And the sucky help. I mean, I first opened my mac and there was no help in keys etc. I had to google it ... wtf? I have to google how to use keys? Lame. I'm not going to put Linux on here because as I said I bought this for a reason (a professional reason), I will persevere and since I have terminal access I figure I can subvert the user interface eventually.

But overall I have to say the Apple "ease of use" is a lie. Or more likely it is for the those who don't know how to use computers.

Heh. Well, if PC's are for kids, I suggest you do a little market research and find out the percentage of businesses that use PC's versus Macs. I'm pretty sure you will find the PC number fairly lopsided. Trust me, do the research, since you apparently "know better."

That's besides the point. I use PC hardware because it is far more cost effective. I don't need to pay for pretty eye candy (like an aluminum shell) on a laptop.

And uh, how is Adobe an Apple company?

Thanks for the comments anyway!

re:Alex 22 January 2008 at 8:35 pm #...

this is the only comment i found stupid, PCs are for kids, that why they are so easy to use, macs are for professionals so if you don't know how to use on then why did you get one?? I have one for music production, as do all the people I know that are also into it! Not only that Film editors, Digital Imagers and design engineers all use them aswell for their work, all the soft where is for macs!! Microsoft had to pay millions to adobe AN APPLE COMPANY to allow the use of their products on PCs, and millions more for them to be able to put it as a windows essential.... so maybe you should learn a bit more incase u get shamed out voicing your opinions in room full of people who know better!

Heh, thanks for your comments. Get out much?

I'm glad you like OSX. Stick with it. Unfortunately, the world doesn't run on OSX. As much as I am sure you wish it would, it doesn't. Period. I need Windows and I need Linux. I am more productive with Linux. I may be the only one in the world where that is true, but for me, it is. I tried OSX in my professional and personal life for 3 months. It wasn't for me. I can do more and get more done in Linux.

I'm not showing off anything, I'm just saying that I prefer Linux and it makes me more productive, and I still prefer a single key for Page Up and/or Down.

Work bought me my Macbook. I don't argue with free.

Besides, this is my blog, if I want to cry, I can and will. You don't like it? Suck it and leave.

Your story makes no sense at all.

In my opinion Apple made me pay way too much for my MacBook, but to me it is worth it so I can use OSX (okay and 2 finger scroll). But you buy this over expensive piece of hardware to put on LInux? And this when you get a more powerful machine for half the price?

And then you have to tell the world how crap your computer is for not having page up/page down keys, when you are supposed to use fn+up arrow/fn+down arrow. If you really can't get over the loss, then buy a fucking Windows USB keyboard and you'll have all the keys you are missing so much. But please stop crying over things you don't seem to have a clue about.

To me there is no better system for production than OSX. Everything works straight out of the box and if you DO take the time to learn the philosophy and shortcuts it is a real GEM.

Now who is the kid trying to show off? You're definitely not the professional you are claiming to be.

I've had my MacBook for about a month now and the PgUp and PgDn always worked, without having to use the Fn key. As of today, that doesn't work anymore. If you combine the Fn key with the up arrow and down arrow, you move down and up a lot, which isn't handy if you're reading something. Sometimes the down arrow works when I press only that, but VERY slowly... anyone any tips?

That is certainly your opinion. I just prefer another Linux distro with more options and less bloat.
